What is the Paleo Diet?

The Paleo Diet or Caveman Diet is a high-protein low-carbohydrate diet that is based on the foods eaten by early humans of the Paleolithic era. This  was a time of rapid evolution for the human species, and it was during this time that modern humans became genetically adapted to a Paleolithic diet.

For most of our evolutionary history, human beings were hunter/gatherers.  Early humans hunted animals, fished, and gathered plants for food. There were no crops, such as rice or wheat, and because animal domestication had not developed, animal milk products did not exist. As a result, the Paleo Diet of early humans was fundamentally different than the modern diet.  The Caveman Diet consisted of whole foods from a greater variety of plants and animals which resulted in a greater consumption of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and micro-nutrients.

With archaeological evidence from Paleolithic sites in east Africa and the Near East along with anthropological data on modern hunter/gatherers, many experts believe that early humans had a diet that was very high in lean animal protein.  Meat from wild animals is low in fat, and early humans living near water ate fish and seafood like oysters, mussels and prawns.  Typical "Paleo recipes" had large amounts of lean protein and plenty of nutrient dense whole foods and no carbohydrates from grains.

In addition to lean protein, the Paleo Diet includes large amounts of:

  • leafy vegetables
  • root vegetables
  • fruits and berries
  • grass seeds
  • nuts
  • honey

Root vegetables are high in nutrients and fiber and provide a large portion of daily energy requirements. Berries are a nutrient dense super food.  They are packed with phyto-nutrients and antioxidants.  Salt intake is minimal in the Paleo diet.

The Paleo Diet does not include:

  • dairy products
  • cereal grains such as wheat, barley, oats, or rice
  • legumes, including beans, soy, peas, or peanuts
  • corn
  • yeast
  • processed foods such as sugar, bread, or pastries
  • alcohol.
